About Zion Lutheran Church

Zion Lutheran Church was founded in the early 1900's by a group of Norwegian immigrants who had settled in the area.  We were originally called the Zion Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The Church grew with the community. At one time during the late 1950's and the early 1960's Zion's Sunday School grew to about 600 students.  Our Education wing, constructed in 1958, was being used to conduct three sections of Sunday School each Sunday simply to meet the demand.  Today, Sunday School classes are much smaller, reflecting the shrinking population of young people in the area.

Zion took a big step in 1988 with the construction of a new Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, and Kitchen to replace the stone building which had stood on the corner of 6th Avenue and 6th Street for so many years.  After a lot of thought and prayer, the congregation decided to remain where they were and replace the existing building rather than relocating.  One of the distinctive features of the new Sanctuary is the Pipe Organ.  The pipes frame the hexaganol stained glass window beautifully.
The congregation was committed to retaining memories of the beloved old church building, and one of the ways that was accomplished was the incorporation of the stained glass windows from the old church into the wall above the rear of the sanctuary.
Of course, the heart of the church is always people, and Zion has been blessed with active, committed members and clergy for years.
