About Our Community

International Falls, Minnesota, home of Zion Lutheran Church, is a small city of about 7000 people located on the Canadian Border. We are about 300 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul. International Falls is the County Seat of Koochiching County, total population less than 20,000.

The main employer in International Falls is the Boise Cascade Corporation Paper Mill. Our economy is heavily dependent on forest products. Other large employers include International Bildrite, a manufacturer of sheathing, United Health Care, a data entry and health insurance administrator, Independent School District 361 , Koochiching County, and Voyageurs National Park, which is headquarted here in International Falls.

The "International Falls" as a geological feature no longer exist. The falls were dammed in the early 1900's in order to provide power for the newly constructed Paper Mill. However, the Borderland area, as it is known, is still famous for natural beauty and almost limitless opportunities for outdoor recreation year around.

Of course the area is famous nationwide for its fishing. Rainy Lake, which empties into Rainy River just two miles east on International Falls, stretches 40 miles along the Minnesota-Ontario border. Much of this is included in Voyageurs National Park, which also takes in all or part of Kabetogama, Namakan, Crane, and Sandpoint Lakes along with numerous Islands and smaller lakes. Walleye fishing has been steadily improving over the last few years due to the efforts of the Rainy Lake Sportfishing Club, working in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources. Rainy River downstream of International Falls provides world-famous early spring and late fall walleye fishing. There is also a great sturgeon fishery in the River.

Hunting opportunities abound in the fall, and the area is home to terrific winter recreation. Our snowmobile trails are among the state's best and we have extensive cross country ski trails as well. Also, don't forget Falls Country Club, our recently redesigned and expanded 18 hole golf course.

Post secondary education is available through Rainy River Community College located here in International Falls. Our local newspaper, the Daily Journal, has a strong focus on covering local issues and events. International Falls also is home to an extensive health care system, including Falls Memorial Hospital and , as well as Falls Good Samaritan Center.

In a nutshell, the International Falls area offers big city amenities in a small town, friendly atmosphere. To learn more about the area, please feel free to visit the International Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of International Falls, or the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
